I was recently asked if I would help a lady with some prayer ministry. She was a relatively newish Christian, only two years into her walk, who while struggling with life, had become physically and spiritually drained, to the point (in her own words) of “throwing the towel in!” through an experience that she’d received during a church conference.
Apparently, she felt that she’d been singled out for persecution, because of (in her own words) “her style of worshipping”, and during the ministry time, although many people there were touched by God, when the minister approached her, she was warned that, “she couldn’t keep her serpent as a pet!” And while embarrassed and confused, she was never offered any prayer or counsel for understanding, but just felt shunned, (in her words), “as though I was the devil himself!”
And although I think this is sad, I had to smile while reading her mail, when she described the episode in a way, where (in her words) “they had made me feel like I’d literally gone to a store selling demons and picked my favourite!” Apparently, this wasn’t the first church “shunning”; her previous pastor had also told her to leave for making people feel uncomfortable! And so in her rational thinking, she assumed that God must have been angry with her, because in her emotions she felt hurt, ‘church-unaccepted’ and rejected, which pushed her towards seeking support. Eventually, she was referred to me for help, and we further made arrangements for a ministry session.
When I took her cause to prayer, the Lord just gave me a few words. He said, “she has a Kundalini spirit”. So let me try and explain what this is and how it works. Now, many people who are familiar with Yoga will probably have heard the term ‘Kundalini’; it’s a Sanskrit word, which literally means ‘snake’, and the very basic concepts are that the host meditates and chants themselves into a self-hypnosis state, in an attempt to reach enlightenment, and raise up, what is termed, serpent/Kundalini power. This is a practice used in Hinduism and Buddhism, woven into other practices throughout the Orient and Asia, including New Agers, mystics and the occult.
But the truth is that this self-attempt to reach enlightenment brings the host into a spiritual encounter, but not one by the Holy Spirit. Some Christians assume that Yoga practice is ok, terming it as a form of exercise, by replacing the incantations with meditation on biblical scriptures, but even the very performance of body positions and various hand gestures are spiritual invitations to unclean spirits. I’ve witnessed this first hand, during deliverance with Christians who had unintentionally invited this unclean spirit in by participating in, so-called “Christian Yoga”?
This style of attempt to reach ‘enlightenment’, permits this serpent spirit to rise up within their body, allowing it to entwine itself around the spine, through a series of what is termed spiritual ‘waypoints’, known as ‘Chakras’, until it eventually sits over the mind (the crown) and gives the host an out of this world encounter through its spiritual power, deemed the “power of the serpent”, but although this is a spiritual encounter, make no mistake, it is divination with an unclean spirit and not the Holy Spirit.
Some people disagree, or fail to understand how the Holy Spirit and unclean spirits can coexist within our being, but understand, our beings are dimensional; we are spiritual, physical and have been given a soul, the part of our being that makes our personality. See, the moment someone gives their life to Jesus and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit, doesn’t mean that all of their body and soul, as in their will, thoughts, emotions and heart desires, are completely in full alignment with God, or either cleansed by Him. As the Bible clearly tells Christians to allow God to sanctify themselves completely (1Thes.5:23 also John.17:19; 1Thes.4:4; Heb.2:11; 2Tim.2:21; Acts.15:9, James.4:8) and to allow themselves to be transformed (Rom.12:2; 2Cor.3:18). So yes, being born of the Spirit adds a brand new dimension to your being, alive in the Spirit, but the body and soul still need to be raised from the (living) dead, by yielding to the the Holy Spirit.
Which is why we go through the act of water baptism; it is the symbolism of sharing the burial with Jesus into death. “That our old man (our old nature) was (or should be) crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed” (Rom.6:6), as in your old conduct, which lived to fulfil the desires of the flesh and of the mind, according to the world (Satan’s kingdom 2Cor.4:4), and these need to be crucified, as even Paul stated that he had to die daily (1Cor.15:31), because, “He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy” (1Pet.1:15-17). “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1Cor.6:19). And so, the water baptism is just the mere symbolism of you putting to death the part of you that cooperates with the spirit behind the old disobedient nature, where you walked in accordance with the prince of the power of the air (Eph.2:2-4). But through the gift of the Holy Spirit, you have been given the authority to overcome Satan’s spiritual powers operating in the natural world and power to be raised up in Christ to live according to the kingdom of God.
Rom.8:11 “If the Spirit of Him (the Holy Spirit) who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will ALSO give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you”. Also see (2Cor.4:10-13)
See, to be born of the Spirit, is the ability, by faith to “put on Christ” (the Anointing), and become spiritually alive, being fully connected to His spiritual kingdom, with full access to His authority and power to see, pray and hear in the supernatural realm by faith, which in turn gives us the ability to establish a relationship with Jesus, whose Spirit will lead us into all truth (John.16:13), but as new-born babies in the Spirit, in order for us to see the fullness of His spiritual power in our lives and glorify God, we must bring our bodies and souls into the submission of His truths, which is where unclean spirits try and operate.
So as Peter says (1Pet.1:22) "by obeying the truth through the Spirit we can sanctify our souls", and also in (1Pet.3:15) Peter tells us to “sanctify the Lord God in your hearts”. See, our sins are forgiven, but forgiveness doesn’t sanctify the consequences from sin, and much of the consequences from sin have spiritual attachments in our bodies (hearts) and souls. Which is why you, operating in your flesh, cannot make yourself perfect in any way, for the flesh cannot perfect the flesh (Gal.3:3), although many Christians try and do this, to no avail, but trying and striving in your own effort to please God, or change yourself, does not lead to any sanctification, which is why Paul says, “I do not even judge myself. For I know of nothing against myself yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord” (1Cor.4:3). Because the Lord reveals these things by the revelations, and promptings through the Holy Spirit during our relationship with Him (1Cor.2:10-14), and we get sanctified by acting in obedience, to His instructions by faith.
Eph.3:15 “Be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man (HEART & SOUL), that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love (AGAPE LOVE - THE LOVE OF GOD), may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height -- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; (AS IN SURPASSES WORLDLY KNOWLEDGE THROUGH THE SPIRIT) that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Likewise, as the Hebrews were saved from Egypt by the blood of the lamb, He still had to lead them into the wilderness, to get the Egypt out of them! Just as He requires that we get the world out of us. Dying daily to our old nature, as Paul did (1Cor.15:31), being tested and transformed from glory to glory, allowing Him to sanctify us completely in our bodies and souls (1Thes.5:23). So, only by His revelations, in His perfect timing will, “He will guide you into all truth” (John.16:13).
So, it is extremely important to test every spirit, by the word of God, because the prince of the power of the air (Satan), is the great deceiver, and (Eph.2:1-4), tells us that it’s his spirit that works is those in disobedience. Therefore people may experience spiritual promptings in their bodies and souls, “For from within, out of the heart (body) of men, proceed evil thoughts etc.” (Mark 7:21 and see Mat 15:19) and one’s conscience (soul) can be “weak” (1Cor.8:10, 12), “corrupted” (Titus 1:15), “defiled” (1Cor.8:7), “seared” (1Tim.4:2) and “evil” (Heb.10:22). – And all these things that come from within defile a man (Mk.7:23), which is why we need to be vigilant and obedient to the Holy Spirit, who is the only spirit, who will lead you to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind (which is part of the soul), that “you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Rom.12:2). See, the evidence of you being raised from the (living) dead is how you conduct the fruit by the Holy Spirit, (which is Christ rising in you, your new nature), which is “in all goodness, righteousness, and truth” (Eph.5:9), and “love (as in “Agape” ‘the love of God’), joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal.5:22), and “by their fruits” (Mat.7:15-20), we should know those who are of God, because “He (the Holy Spirit) who is in you is greater than he (Satan) who is in the world” (1Jn.4:4).
Now, signs, wonders and miracles will accompany those who believe (Mark.16:17-19), but the Bible doesn’t say that these are the evidence of a person’s transformation; in fact, they are for the purpose of confirming the truth (Mark.16:20), as the Holy Spirit is a Spirit of truth; He witnesses to the truth, which in turn should cause growth to the body of Christ, for the building up of itself in love (Eph.4:16), which are the fruits of the Spirit. Notice how the purpose of His gifts and signs that should accompany you, are not so much for you, but tools to help others transform, to “love from a pure heart (fruits of the Holy Spirit), from a good conscience, and from sincere faith” (1Tim.1:5), so they can fulfil the commissioning too (Mat.28:19; Mk.16:15; Jn20:21).
So now, having established the importance of knowing the truth, and purpose, I hope I have brought some clarity in recognising deceiving spirits, where they are rooted and the significance of testing them, because they always try to lead people away from rising in Christ, and exhibiting His nature, and the “Kundalini serpent spirit” is definitely one to watch out for. It’s extremely devious in the sense that it does give the host a level of spirituality, but it’s an experience from an unclean source with ulterior motive. As I said, only the Holy Spirit leads people through His righteousness into sanctification. Note, the woman in Act.16, whocried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” Understand, that this woman actually proclaimed what was true, but it was by divination with the unclean spirit within her. Yes, she could fortune tell, and give the impression of being spiritually powerful, but unclean spirits never lead people into God’s truth, nor lead their hosts into God’s righteousness or promises, and thus never really become free from carnal bondages or demonstrate true fruits by the Holy Spirit.
Sometimes, during the Lord’s presence, (unknowingly) hosts to unclean spirits may experience a demonic spiritual manifestation and misunderstand these experiences as a demonstration of their spirituality! Assuming it to be the Holy Spirit, on the basis that it only happens in the Lord’s presence, and some of these can manifest in such a waythat unfortunately, can frighten those observing from receiving any prayer! So not all spiritual manifestations, build up the body of Christ, and in fact some can be very disruptive and even exaggerated. But the Bible clearly states, that the proof of your maturity in Christ is by the fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are to be demonstrated in actions and deeds, (Eph.5:9 and Gal.5:22) and not just by outward manifestations during the presence of God or worship, that neither build up or edify the body of Christ.
In fact, I once witnessed, at the beginning of one meeting, a member of a congregation, manifest a ‘Shiva spirit’ (another unclean spirit related to Yoga). I recognised it by the specific enchantments and the symbolic body gestures, which they were violently performing. I informed the pastor, (who was also watching), what this was, and that the person was essentially openly conjuring up destructive warfare over him and his church, but he just encouraged it as the individual’s style of prophetic prayer/worship! But a couple of months later, sadly, this same pastor had, in fact, lost his church and backslidden. Interestingly enough, I discovered that the church venue was also used for Yoga practice (thus demonstrating the importance of (Eph.6:10-21) – recognising the spiritual battle, and using our armour.
This experience led me to ponder the unfortunate lady, who had been referred to me, as she had felt victimised during a Christian conference, by the pastor, because of “her style of worshipping”, and had also been asked to leave her former church, for making people feel uncomfortable! As I conversed with the lady, I questioned her for any previous involvement with any type of Yoga, which she confessed to willingly, giving an invitation to the “Kundalini spirit” during Yoga practice in her former days, so the word of knowledge by the Holy Spirit was confirmed. See, although she had given her life to Jesus, and received the gift of the Holy Spirit, she was only at the very beginning of her process of transformation, but her lack of seeking and understanding the truth, prevented her ability to test any spirit by God’s word (1John 4), and thus, walked contrary to His will, because she did not prepare her heart to seek the Lord (2Chr.12:14).
John 8:31 “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
See, when we lean on our own understanding (Pro.3:5 “do not lean on your own understanding”),and just do what’s right in our own eyes (Pro.21:2) (which maybe not in God’s eyes or word), we can often misunderstand the promptings of the Holy Spirit, which can make it very difficult to establish a true relationship with Jesus, and this often leads to misrepresenting the Holy Spirit in exchange for their own (unsanctified) emotions, or even a mixture of the two, which can leave themselves wide open for deceiving spirits. Remember the principle that faith is not a feeling. Faith is something that we make a decision about and should be based on God’s Word. Something could be true, but it is not necessarily the Truth of God. And so, through lack of knowledge (Hosea.4:6), this particular lady was deceived in thinking that her (unclean) manifestation was a demonstration of her spirituality, and that the divination with it, was actually her gifting! And so, it was time for this “serpent spirit” to go! And hence, we encouraged the lady make the appropriate repentance and renunciations and proceeded to pray and call out the unclean spirit, as instructed by the Holy Spirit.
As we did this, all of a sudden, she sat up straight and went rigid and began to sway like a snake in a strike posture that was trying to weigh up an opponent, and then proceeded to taunt me to gaze into her eyes! Which is why I never pray for anyone by myself. And so, I completely ignored her and continued to be led by the Holy Spirit in prayer, and then all of a sudden the evil spirit convulsed her, throwing her onto the floor. At one point, the evil spirit paused her from convulsing to speak through the woman, to tell me what the snake wanted to do to me! Amusing how, in her previous letter, how she was offended by someone accusing her of having a pet snake, and now she was actually speaking on its behalf! But eventually she proceeded to cough it up out of her mouth.
But what was really amazing about this, was that as she regained and composed herself, she spoke and stated that, all of a sudden, she could feel a healthy fear of God (1Pet.1:17), as in an apprehension and reverence to the consciousness of God as regards to the state of herself, in her thoughts and emotions (body and soul). And an overwhelming hunger for the truth. Notice how that evil spirit had managed to douse out the Holy Spirit, ensnaring her, through her thoughts and emotions (her body and soul), yet to be cleaned, and yet while deceived with false power, that snake led her away from the truth into dryness and managed to quench the real consciousness of God.
See, deliverance is a tool for those who believe (Mk.16:17), for a purpose, as Paul tells us “in the manner of men (or women in this case), I have fought with beasts (snakes), what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise” (1Cor.15:32), and here this lady was now restarting her journey of transformation, being risen in Christ.
Yes, that spirit had given her, in a sense, spiritual power, but for the purpose of misleading, a real snake. And those fake manifestations and fake power are no substitute for the real authority in Christ, or the authentic leading into sanctification. As I said, the authority and power in Christ is for the purpose of building up others; fake power usually builds up the host themselves, which is why, “by their fruits” (Mat.7:15-20), we should know those who are of God.
Make no mistake, “He (the Holy Spirit) who is in you is greater than he (Satan) who is in the world” (1Jn.4:4). But we need to yield to Him and His truths in order to become delivered from our old self and truly risen in Christ.
