Before Jesus, death was the only end for us all, there was no hope of eternal life or meeting with God. See, Jesus came so that we might follow Him, conquer death and be resurrected to eternal life with God (1 Pet 3:18) We are to become sons of God (Rom 8:14) like Christ and be risen with Him. Colossians 3:1-17 explains how. ‘If you are risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection on the heavenly things above, not on things on the earth as your old self is meant to be dead while your new life is hidden with Christ in God so that when Christ appears, you shall also appear with him in glory. Put to death your fleshly lusts; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, like idolatry because the wrath of God will come upon the children of disobedience which you were before in your old life. Now also put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy and even filthy language from your mouth and do not lie. Make sure you put away your old self and your old ways and put on the new man, renewed in the knowledge of Christ who created the new you. Be it Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: Christ is all, and in all. Put on as the elect of God, holy and beloved, mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness and longsuffering. Forbear and forgive one another and if any man quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you, so also do you. And above all, put on love, which is the bond of perfection and let the peace of God rule in your hearts as we are called into one body. Be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.’ Let us all become the righteousness of God through Christ; to know Him, the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings in the hope that we might also attain the same resurrection as Christ (Phil 3:9-11).
