We are called to do good especially towards those who are 'bad' to us (Matthew 5:44) In fact, Paul says that whenever we have the opportunity, we should always do good (Galatians 6:10) But many people mistake doing good works for doing God's work or mistake being good for being Godly. God is certainly good but not anything that seems good is of God. Remember when Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and were banished from the garden? You see, before they gained the knowledge of the good or evil way, they only knew God's way - whatever and however way it was, it would always be Godly. But after they knew of good and evil, the whole of mankind became sinners (Romans 5:12) Now, it's clear the evil way isn't something we should aspire towards but what's wrong with the good way? Was it a good thing for Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac? (Genesis 22:2-6) or for Noah to only save 8 souls and let everyone else drown? (1 Peter 3:20) Was it a good thing for Daniel to be thrown into the den to be killed by lions? (Daniel 6:16-27) You see, all of these and many more instances in the bible doesn't seem good but they were acts of faith that glorified God when they were accomplished. Paul says that whatever we do, we do all to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31) We are also called to be filled with the fruits of righteousness, by way of JesusChrist, unto the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:11) That is why Paul explains that we are to be justified unto righteousness by our faith in Jesus; that we act by faith what God calls us to do - like Abraham, Noah and Daniel and not just do good works or be good by the law (Romans 3:25-28) When we do what is of God rather than what seems good, God is glorified and we cannot boast of ourselves or our efforts. Instead, God brings them to pass. It is easy to slip into doing good believing one is doing what God wants. When we focus by our own motives and desires on being good or doing what seems good, we can miss hearing and doing what God really calls us to do, that He intended for us from the beginning that glorifies Him. Glorify God in all that you do! Comments are closed.
