The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the giving of the new wine that only began when Jesus appeared. It is a personal encounter with God who gives by His grace, the Holy Spirit to those who thirst, those who ask and those who believe on Jesus. When the Holy Spirit abides in us, we are cleansed from the inside as we transform and yield to His convictions. This is the required sanctification in the new covenant.
In the old covenant, water was used in ritual washing for the purpose of purification to enter into the presence of God. This outward washing did not always affirm the inward cleansing of the heart. Jesus performed His first miracle, turning water into wine to symbolise the transition of the old covenant, an outward ritual cleansing by water to the new covenant, an the inward sanctification by the Holy Spirit, a gift by the grace of God.
